Mulled wine with a generous splash of cherry wine

The winter is coming!!! While going through the streets of Aarhus the smell of roasted almonds and mulled wine is lying in the air. The entire city is light up by christmas lights, street musician playing old christmas songs and you can see people buying their first christmas gifts.I love this time of the year and started decorating our apartment with some simple christmas decorations, where candles and soft christmas music ensure for a hyggelig christmas ambience in the apartment. But the best thing is to share those moments with your friends. Last week we decided for a christmas gathering at ours, making our own mulled wine, delicious christmas chocolate cookies from Elfenkindberlin, rice pudding with melted butter, sugar & cinnamon (sooooo GOOD!)  and some marzipan nougat christmas figures were on the list. Old christmas songs playing in the background and candle lights ensured for an amazing & hyggelig christmas evening. Gathered around our couch table, we were enjoying all our homemade & super delicious christmas treats. Everything just tasted super delicious and the homemade mulled wine with a taste of cherry wine was an absolute winner. Here after all my amazing recipe tester and I agreed on that the recipe from our mulled wine had to come on My Tasty Travel.Timed with the first advent here now the recipe for our homemade mulled wine with a generous splash of cherry wine, for you. 🙂 I am excited to hear what you think and wish you a happy first advent.

Mulled wine


Serves 5-6 glasses   

One bottle of red wine
1 ½  dl of cherry wine (click here for our absolute favorite cherry wine)
The zest of ½ organic orange
2 dl of fresh orange juice
1 dl of water
One cinnamon stick
Approximately 10 cloves
About 10 fresh cardamom pods, roughly grounded with a pestle
4 star anise
Caster sugar, after taste
Almond slivers

Fresh orange slices


Combine the wine, cherry wine, water, zest, cinnamon stick, star anise, cloves and cardamom in a large saucepan and let it stand for 1 or 2 hours. Bring to boil and simmer over low heat for 10 min. Add the fresh pressed orange juice and let it simmer for another 5 min.. After personal taste add some of the caster sugar, boil for another minute, strain and serve immediately.

Distribute raisins, almond slices and fresh orange slices in six glasses ➻ pour over the mulled wine ➻ Enjoy

Emelies tip:

For an even stronger flavor, in a saucepan let the wine and spices stand overnight.
